UNDERSTANDING THE ASCENDANT

A point on the horizon, not a second Sun sign.

HORIZON

The sign coming up

The ascendant is the zodiac sign intersecting the eastern horizon at the birth moment.

HOUSE ONE

The chart's beginning

It opens the first house and organizes the sequence of the other life areas.

CONTEXT

Part of a full chart

Its ruler, aspects, the Sun, the Moon and the rest of the chart change how it is read.

WHY TIME MATTERS

The local horizon keeps moving.

Earth rotates continuously, so the zodiac changes position against the horizon throughout the day. A rising sign often remains for roughly two hours, but latitude and season change the timing.

Use the most reliable time available

A recorded time is better than a rounded family memory. Near a boundary, even a modest difference may change the sign or degree.

Place matters too

The birth city provides coordinates and the correct historical time zone. Two cities do not share exactly the same local horizon.

Unknown time means unknown ascendant

Moira can calculate other planetary placements without a time, but it will not invent a rising sign.

QUESTIONS

What to know about your rising sign.

Is my rising sign my outward personality?

That is a popular shorthand. Traditionally it is the chart's starting point and must be read with its ruler and the whole chart.

Can my rising sign change?

Your natal ascendant does not change, but its exact calculation depends on accurate birth data.

What if the result is near a boundary?

Check the recorded time and city. Moira prefers a visible uncertainty over false precision.
